With reverberations continuing from the sale of low-priced foreign currency at Halkbank’s website, a call for Halkbank’s management to resign has come from Banking Regulation and Supervision Authority (BRSA) Founding Member Prof. Kemal Çevik.

Speaking to Deniz Ayhan from Sözcü, Çevik said, “Pronouncements to the effect that the bank’s purchase-sale transactions have no validity are void in terms of economic law,” and noted the following:

URGENT INTERVENTION

“The pronouncements of those who have made an exceptionally grave error the like of which has not been seen in the banking sector are giving expression to a graver error. It is inevitable that the concerned parties take immediate action to prevent irreparable future losses to the sector by those who committed this act, perhaps intentionally. The failure for the BRSA and the bank’s dominant shareholder, the Treasury, to take the necessary action in relation to those who have brought their trustworthiness into doubt in the sector makes them liable, too.

Pronouncements to the effect that the bank’s purchase-sale transactions have no validity are void in terms of economic law, because the positive law of our country that is striving to make headway in becoming a law-based state that has embraced contractual freedom as a constitutional principle cannot usurp the right of foreign currency buyers who are party to purchase-sale contracts. There must be an urgent intervention in the matter.”

CHP TAKES IT TO PARLIAMENT

The sale of dollars and euros at a low exchange rate that occurred at Halkbank has also been brought onto the parliamentary agenda by the CHP. CHP Mersin MP Alpay Antmen has submitted a parliamentary question requesting that it be answered in writing by Deputy President Fuat Oktay.

Antmen has posed the questions, “Why have Halkbank and the rulership still not announced the amount of dollars and euros at the bank before the error occurred and after the error? With the rulership attributing the rise in the dollar to foreign powers, does it also have the software of its own state’s bank made by foreign powers? Who are the people responsible for this situation? Has an administrative investigation been launched into them?”
