Religious education diplomacy
The Ministry of National Education has queried the European Court of Human Rights ruling over compulsory religious education with the Foreign Ministry in relation to the new educational programme.
The Ministry of National Education has suspended work on drafting other courses in the new educational programme and, as to the Religious Culture and Morality course, it has not released the draft. It has been learnt that the Ministry has queried ECHR rulings over religious education in Turkey with the Foreign Ministry in relation to the programme for this course.
If the Ministry heeds ECHR rulings, the possibility arises of religious education becoming optional. Rulings were obtained in actions brought in 2007 and 2014 at the ECHR that the implementation of compulsory religious education is in breach of the European Convention of Human Rights.
