STOP STRANGLING POLITICAL FREEDOMS
Included in the draft of the Venice Commission’s report into the constitutional amendment in Turkey is the statement: ‘The democratic system has regressed dramatically and is on the road to an autocracy and a one-person regime.’ It is said in the report that, ‘The referendum should either be postponed until the ending of the state of emergency, or restrictions on political freedoms should be lifted.’
NO SEPARATION OF POWERS
Stated in the report, in which it is noted that the constitutional amendments dispense with the principle of the separation of powers and do away with the independence of the judiciary, is, ‘The presence of many HDP MPs in prison and the casting of open votes when the measure was debated in parliament bring into question the real support for these “reforms”.’
JAGLAND: ECHR ADMISSIBILITY BECKONS FOR THE REMANDED JOURNALISTS AND MPS
Council of Europe Secretary General, Thorbjørn Jagland, said in a statement he made following his meeting with Justice Minister Bekir Bozdağ in Strasbourg that the remanded journalists and MPs’ cases may be admitted by the European Court of Human Rights. Jagland indicated that if the Constitutional Court does not deal with the cases soon, the ECHR will begin to examine the applications.
