Former President Kenan Evren jailed for life for 1980 coup

 

Former Turkish President Kenan Evren (96) and former Air Force commander Tahsin Sahinkaya (89) were jailed for life by an Ankara court on Wednesday for staging and conducting the military coup d’etat on 12 September 1980.

"Should we feed them in prison for years instead of hanging them?" had asked Evren in a speech in 1984, referring to those executed as a result of the coup.
