Youth unemployment on the rise

Overall unemployment in Turkey remained in double figures at 10.6% in the August period covering July, August and September. Youth unemployment rose by 0.7% to 20.6%. Unemployment in the previous period was 10.7% and in the same period last year 11.3%.

Overall unemployment in Turkey remained in double figures at 10.6% in the August period covering July, August and September. Youth unemployment rose by 0.7% to 20.6%. Unemployment in the previous period was 10.7% and in the same period last year 11.3%.

NON-AGRICULTURAL UNEMPLOYMENT IS 12.8%
 
From Turkish Statistical Institute data, with non-agricultural unemployment standing at 12.8%, employment rose by 355,000 as against the same period last year to 28.8 million people and the employment rate rose by 1.3% to 48%.
 
With the number of people employed in the agricultural sector rising by 193,000, employment in non-agricultural sectors rose by 1,163,000. Of those in employment, 20.7% work in agriculture, 18.9% in industry, 7.9% in construction and 52.6% in the service sector. With the share of total employment accounted for by the agricultural sector and industrial sector falling by 0.3% and 0.2% respectively as against the same period last year, the construction sector’s share rose by 0.5% while the share of the service sector remained unchanged.
 
With the labour force expanding in the August period by 1,266,000 to 32,233,000 people, the labour force participation rate increased by 1.1% to 53.7%. Comparing the same periods, the labour force participation rate among men rose by 0.9% to 73.5%, while among women it rose by 1.2% to 34.3%.

Seasonally adjusted employment is estimated to have risen against the previous period by 204,000 to 28,337,000 people. The employment rate rose by 0.3% to 47.2%

On a seasonally adjusted basis, with the number unemployed falling by 111,000 to 3,417,000, the unemployment rate fell by 0.3% to 10.8%.

The seasonally adjusted labour force participation rate increased by 0.1% as against the previous period to 52.9%. With the number of those employed according to economic activity falling by 35,000 in the agricultural sector, it rose by 74,000 in the industrial sector, 59,000 in the construction sector and 105,000 in the service sector.
