The United June Movement has said, “No to war” in its statement on the Afrin operation, and, stressing that the operation was not a “national” initiative, stated that it had a domestic political aim.

The United June Movement has made a statement about the Afrin operation that is being staged jointly by the Turkish Armed Forces and the jihadist Free Syrian Army. It was stressed in the statement that the atmosphere of war that is being created is “a game of the AKP and Palace rulership.”

The statement, in which it was noted that Turkey’s border security was possible through fostering peace in Syria, went on to say, “The atmosphere of war that is being created is a game of the AKP and Palace rulership, which has embarked on the quest for a new alliance since the cooperation it set up with FETO collapsed. There is a wish to create a ‘survival issue’ by exploiting nationalistic sentiment in society with this dangerous game. The Palace regime has transitioned to the ‘constant war’ concept in accordance with its domestic political needs. This concept supports a state of emergency order made permanent. The aim is to polish Erdoğan up as ‘commander in chief’, to varnish him as ‘national leader’ and keep the state-military alliance formed around him alive.”

Security cannot be ensured through imperialist policies

Included in the statement, which said, “Those who support this war should know that the Afrin attack is not a ‘national’ initiative that is in the people’s interest, but an operation to organise domestic politics and the country’s psychology in favour of the Palace regime,” were the following comments: “Those who are embroiling the country in open warfare and are committing a crime by sending our sons to their deaths are capable of branding the proponents of peace ‘terrorists,’ claiming them not to be ‘national and local.’ ‘National union’ rhetoric is an extension of the ‘national front’ policy. Turkey’s border security is possible through ending the civil war and fostering peace in Syria. Even if it is named ‘olive branch’, it is impossible for peace to find life through a cross-border military operation. Peace can come to life through granting rights to all the peoples living in Syria and within a framework of justice and equality. Imperialist strategies and policies based on these strategies will bring a smile to the face of absolutely none of the Middle Eastern people. Sight must never be lost of this. No to war! Peace in the Middle East will be the product, not of the US, Russia and Iran’s interventions aimed at Syria or the AKP rulership’s ‘triumphalism’, but a future that the people will weave of their own wills.”
