The report that disses the CHP’s evidence

The CHP is readying itself for the damages suit that President Erdoğan has brought in response to Kılıçdaroğlu’s remark, “You are FETO’s political leg.” The CHP will submit in evidence to the court the 71 pages of documents in which it illustrated the relations between FETO and AKP administrators that the Parliamentary Commission excluded from its report.

The CHP has replied with the document consisting of 71 pages into “FETO’s political leg,” which is at issue in the 250,000 lira damages suit that President Tayyip Erdoğan has brought against CHP General Chair Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, that it previously contributed to the Parliamentary Coup Investigation Commission report. In the document that is also expected to be submitted to the court following the legal action brought by Erdoğan, AKP administrators’ relations with FETO are illustrated one after another with video recordings, photographs, press cuttings and social media posts. With the said document causing discomfort in the AKP, it was first removed from the commission report and printing of the commission report was subsequently halted.

With Kılıçdaroğlu having said at his party’s group meeting, “FETO’s number one political leg is the individual occupying the presidential chair. Let him sue me and I’ll prove it,” President Erdoğan brought a 250,000 lira non-pecuniary damages suit against Kılıçdaroğlu. The lawsuit has reignited public debate over “FETO’s political leg.” Harsh exchanges of words were experienced between the AKP and CHP over “FETO’s political leg” at the drafting stage of the report by the Parliamentary Coup Investigation Commission set up with the support of all political parties following the 15 July coup attempt and, in sections appended to the report by the AKP without informing the opposition, the accusation was made that, “The CHP is in the same union of purpose with FETO.” In response to this, the CHP submitted a 71-page additional commentary to the report and laid bare the relationship between the AKP and FETO.

However, the additional commentary was removed in a cavalier manner from the report at the time of its printing; with this coming to light, its printing was halted following discussions. Despite the passage of sixteen months since its operations ended, the Coup Investigation Commission still appears as operational in current official parliamentary records.

 “Brotherhood” document

Numerous documents are contained in the report titled “AKP-FETO brotherhood” that the CHP submitted to the commission. These are some of the video records involved:

The record in which Erdoğan summoned the FETO leader back home and said, “Let this longing for the homeland end,” the record concerning Erdoğan’s performance of Hakan Şükür’s marriage with Gülen hosting the wedding, the record of Erdoğan conveying his transoceanic gratitude following the 2010 referendum results, the record of Erdoğan’s praise and encouragement-filled addresses to the Turkish Confederation of Businessmen and Industrialists, the record in which Bekir Bozdağ said at the Turkish Language Olympics, “Heartfelt greetings in Antalya to our venerable scholarly gentleman Fetullah Gülen,” the record in which Bekir Bozdağ said in the General Assembly of Parliament, “Gülen is a precious value that this country has raised,” the record in which Bekir Bozdağ said with reference to the Gulenist formation within the police and judiciary, “Is such a thing feasible?” the record in which Binali Yıldırım read Gülen’s poem at the Turkish Language Olympics, the record in which Bülent Arınç said, “The scholarly gentleman is in my view a man above politics and he can see better than us,” and the record in which Hüseyin Çelik said, “The Gulenists have supposedly infiltrated the state ... this is ludicrous.”

 “The AKP saved Gülen”

Included among the documents is also news coverage from certain newspapers before tension erupted between FETO and the AKP. This includes the headline, “AK Party saves Gülen” carried on the front page of Yeni Akit newspaper on 29 November 2013 accompanied by the remarks, “The scholarly gentleman Fethullah, who was on trial in 2000 at the State Security Court with his imprisonment for ten years sought, has been acquitted thanks to an amendment the AK Party government has made to the Counterterrorism Law.” Also included is the “Get well soon” announcement that Gülen placed in newspapers due to health problems that Erdoğan was experiencing.

Numbering among the documents is also Erdoğan’s remark, “Whatever the Gulenists wanted I sent it back” covered in headline news in the Star, Sabah, Akşam, Yeni Şafak, Yeni Akit and Milliyet newspapers on 24 November 2013. Also included are comments by Numan Kurtulmuş that, “It is inconceivable for FETO not to be in the ruling party” and Bekir Bozdağ that, “The CHP spoke of it and so did others. We did not believe these things.” Alongside seven different photographs depicting Erdoğan and Gülen side by side, two different photographs are also included of openings which Erdoğan and Gülen attended jointly. Photographs of the AKP’s Burhan Kuzu shaking Gülen’s hand and dining at the same table and photographs of the money printed to commemorate the Turkish Language Olympics also number among the documents. The documents also include photographs of AKP members of parliament who went to Pennsylvania to visit FETO leader Gülen.
