There are signs that Member of Parliament Enis Berberoğlu, held in Maltepe Prison following his sentencing to five years and ten months’ imprisonment, could be released if re- elected to parliament. Milliyet newspaper columnist Melih Aşık has raised the matter in his column. The relevant section of Aşık's article is as follows:

“You ask who the snap election will benefit and how. It will undoubtedly benefit certain individuals. For example, CHP MP Enis Berberoğlu must be looking forward to the election. Enis Berberoğlu’s plucky lawyer Yiğit Acar explains:

‘Enis Berberoğlu, who was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment by the court and whose case is currently with the Court of Cassation, will be fielded as a parliamentary candidate by the CHP. He will attain his freedom on the day following his election to parliament. If it is recalled, immunities were lifted on a one-time basis. Berberoğlu will retake his place in parliament following his election. The CHP has guaranteed this.’”

Berberoğlu was convicted of the offence of “disclosing information that required to remain confidential in view of the state’s security or domestic or foreign political interests.”
