Gül’s name was widely mentioned as the joint presidential candidate of the opposition parties, but the former president announced that he won’t run for president.
Speaking after Friday prayers on May 4, Gül confirmed that Chief of General Staff Gen. Hulusi Akar and presidential spokesperson İbrahim Kalın paid him a visit, but refrained from giving further details.

“Such a visit took place, but it happened in front of the eyes of the public during daytime. There is no secret aspect to it,” Gül told reporters in Istanbul, as he added that “no disrespectful behavior was shown during the visit.”

“There were no threats, impositions or disrespectful behavior during the visit as it is said to be. I want this to be known. The meeting took place at my office,” he also said.
Earlier on May 4, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan denied making any comments regarding the speculations surrounding Gül.

“Don’t make me talk about this. I don’t need to say anything about this issue. Everyone knows what’s going on,” Erdoğan said.
