Abdullah Gül opponents liquidated

Haluk Pekşen, noting that, at the time Abdullah Gül was the most favoured potential presidential candidate for the alliance of which the CHP is part, he violently opposed this, spoke as follows:

 “I was one of those who came out in opposition when Gül’s name was first touted. Three months ago I received the warning, ‘Don’t oppose Gül’s candidacy. It will cost you your seat in parliament.’ I paid no heed. I continued to speak of my opposition on television programmes on which I appeared. There was a further warning most recently a month ago. But, I continued to persistently voice my opposition in public. The way things look to me is that, along with me, anybody who objected to Gül’s presidential candidacy has been kept off the list.”

Pekşen, saying in the statement he gave Sözcü that he had no qualms over the struggle he put up for the time he was an MP, said, “I believe that I performed my duty as an MP in society’s conscience. Turkey’s future is more important than my seat. I will continue in politics. I will neither leave my country nor my party.”
