Çanakkale spirit sacrificed for the ballot box
Commemorations of the 102nd anniversary of the victory turned into a political show by the AKP and into ‘Yes’ campaigning by Erdoğan
LIKE A PARTY RALLY
With a variety of events being staged around the country to mark the 18 March Çanakkale Victory and Martyrs Commemoration Day, the commemorations in Çanakkale served as a stage for Erdoğan and the AKP’s campaign for the presidential system. AKP supporters, who filled the 18 March stadium, shouted the slogan, ‘He’s coming, he’s coming, the great president is coming.’
HE APPEARED ALONG WITH MINISTER KAYA
Erdoğan, who appeared along with minister Fatma Betül Kaya, one of the main actors in the Netherlands crisis, claimed that constitutional change was a ‘historic opportunity’ for Turkey. Erdoğan said, ‘This system is not a translation, but is home-grown. Everybody who considers themself to be home-grown and national should stand by this constitutional amendment.’
