Death threats against our columnist Aydın Engin
Two death threats were made one after the other to our columnist Aydın Engin last Saturday and Sunday. Cumhuriyet’s legal office applied the day before yesterday to the public prosecution for an investigation to be launched into the matter.
From the account given by our columnist Aydın Engin, the first threat was on last Saturday. Aydın Engin had passed to the Anatolian shore to take part in an interview at a book shop and, while he was walking along Moda Street to the book shop after having parked his car, he was confronted by three youths. One of them signalled to him to stop and then said, ‘Take a good look at the sun. This will be the last time you see it.’
Aydın Engin gave the following account of remaining developments:
‘I was astonished and afraid, and mumbled things like “What are you saying?” Then he repeated, “Take a good look at the sun. This will be the last time you see it.” I hurried on my way. They didn’t follow me. I don’t know if they stayed in the same place because I did not look back. I did not attach too much importance to Saturday’s event. I thought I had been accosted by two or three hooligans. However, somebody phoned me while I was in my room at the paper on Sunday and said, “Your days are numbered, c*nt.” I was astonished and said, “Pardon?” He repeated, “Your days are numbered, c*nt.” and then hung up.
