“Halt the war” say 170 well-known figures in letter to MPs

With the fifth day continuing of the operation named “Olive Branch” Turkey launched against Afrin on 20 January, the assault continues to provoke reactions. More than 170 figures, including former ministers, actors, writers, directors and journalists, have signed a joint letter calling for the assault on Afrin to be halted and sent it to all members of parliament, especially AKP MPs.
 
The letter sent by email reads as follows:
 
“Dear Justice and Development Party Member of Parliament,
 
We the undersigned citizens call out to you on behalf of millions of our people in view of the powers you hold and responsibility you bear.
 
We want peace and calm in our country and region, not war. We believe that the best way to protect our borders and avoid experiencing existential problems is to strengthen mutual ties of friendship and good neighbourliness. We know from experience that our security will be ensured, not through amassing arms worth billions and a war that will cost the lives of the flower of our youth and leave tens of thousands homeless and countryless, but through mutual negotiation and cooperation, and, moreover, that this is possible.
 
We know that the armed intervention in Afrin, which is Syrian territory and has not threatened Turkey, will bring to our region and country, not peace and security, but even greater problems, destruction and pain, and will wound the hearts of our Kurdish fellow citizens.
 
With even the presence of soldiers of foreign countries who have turned the Middle East into a proxy-war Hell being a violation of international law, the intention to join them and steps taken in this direction will only visit despair on our country and cause social, political, economic and human losses that it will prove irreparable for decades.
 
 
With our identity and responsibilities as citizens, we warn you holders of power before our people and history and invite you to heed our words and act with common sense, halt the war immediately and solve the problem through dialogue.
