Merkel is concerned, too

German chancellor Merkel raised the issue of remanded journalists at every stage of her ten-hour visit to Ankara. Merkel, making an explicit reference to freedom of thought and media in her meeting with Erdoğan and Yıldırım, said that it was unacceptable for journalists to be remanded.
Merkel obtained information about the remanded journalists from CHP leader Kılıçdaroğlu, whom she told, ‘I am meeting you to get a true picture of Turkey.’ Following this, she signalled, ‘I am concerned about democracy in Turkey.’
