Money on empty desks
The Education Ministry has spent TRY 4.979 billion on religious vocational high schools, even while confessing to their low quality and lack of pupil interest in them
INVESTMENT ON RELIGIOUS VOCATIONAL HIGH SCHOOLS CONTINUES
According to the Ministry of National Education’s report on its 2016 activities, the General Directorate of Religious Education spent virtually one a half times the TRY 3.885 billion budget allocated to it. The ministry, which even admits in its own reports that pupils show no interest in religious vocational high schools, nevertheless says, ‘on with the investment’ and has decided to increase the number of religious vocational high schools with guest houses.
SCHOOLS NEGLECTED ONCE MORE
With the ministry loosening the purse strings for religious education, it has only managed to earthquake proof 8% of educational buildings. Only 29,000 books have been sent to school libraries, while 150,000 should have been sent. The target for 100 cultural books to be printed has not been met. The conducting of 25 new educational environment projects was targeted, but not one of them was even carried out.
