An investigation has been opened into Demirtaş over a matter on which there is no summary of proceedings even though the immunity of the detained parliamentarians remains in place under immunity provisions. From what has been gleaned, the Chief Prosecution has launched an investigation into a speech that Demirtaş made in 2014. The Chief Prosecution sent a letter to the prison where Demirtaş is being held in detention to procure his statement as part of the investigation it launched.
Summary of proceedings at jet speed
In the Chief Prosecution’s letter of 6 November 2017, Demirtaş was asked to make a statement via video link as part of the probe launched into him. With Demirtaş’s lawyer in turn objecting that there was no summary of proceedings for the investigation that the prosecution had initiated and Demirtaş could be prosecuted under summaries of proceedings compiled up to 20 May 2016 on which provision was made for Demirtaş’s immunity, the prosecution realised its mistake. The prosecution consequently withdrew the letter it addressed to Edirne Prison and compiled a summary of proceedings seeking lifting of immunity with application to Demirtaş.
