German Chancellor Angela Merkel's spokesperson Ulrike Demmer has replied to President Tayyip Erdoğan, who had commented with reference to the European Parliament’s call for accession negotiations between Turkey and the European Union to be temporarily frozen, “You have never acted well towards humanity or looked directly at people. When babies like Aylan washed up on the shores, you didn’t take them. We are a country that is feeding three million refugees. You have not kept your promises. Look here. If you go any further we will open the border crossings.” Demmer said, “Threats made by the parties will do no good.”

Following the European Parliament’s recommendation yesterday for accession negotiations between Turkey and the European Union to be temporarily frozen, today Erdoğan addressed the following words to EU countries:

You have not kept your promises. When 50,000 refugees were streaming towards Kapıkule you cried out and started saying, ‘What are we to do if Turkey opens its border crossing?’ Look here. If you go any further these border crossings will open. You need to know this, too”

According to a report by AFP, German Chancellor Angela Merkel's spokesperson Ulrike Demmer said, “We regard the EU-Turkey agreement as being a success for both sides. And it is in all parties’ interest for this agreement to be maintained.” Demmer, stating, “Threats made by the parties will do no good,” said “There are difficulties. But we must overcome them.”

A second reply has come from European Parliament rapporteur for Turkey, Kati Piri.
