Topbaş's son-in-law Kavurmacı and former police chief Çapkın detained
Ömer Faruk Kavurmacı and former Istanbul police chief Hüseyin Çapkın, who had orders for their apprehension to facilitate their detention issued against them as part of the FETO investigation, have been detained.
Ömer Faruk Kavurmacı, who was arrested with an order for his apprehension to facilitate his detention issued against him as part of the trial into FETO’s business world formation, and former Istanbul police chief Hüseyin Çapkın, who had an order for his apprehension to facilitate his detention issued against him by Istanbul Serious Crime Court No 30, having accepted the indictment drafted as part of the investigation into the civil service formation, have been detained.
HÜSEYİN ÇAPKIN SURRENDERED
An apprehension order to facilitate his detention was issued against Ömer Faruk Kavurmacı, whose imprisonment from seven and a half to fifteen years is sought on the count of ‘membership of an armed terrorist organisation’ in the indictment against 86 defendants targeting Turkish Confederation of Businessmen and Industrialists managers and members. Kavurmacı was arrested in Istanbul in the evening hours. Another person to have an apprehension order issued against him was former Istanbul police chief Hüseyin Çapkın. Çapkın also came to Istanbul Police Headquarters accompanied by his lawyer in the evening hours and surrendered. Kavurmacı and Çapkın were sent to the judicial complex and detained.
The 120-page Turkish Confederation of Businessmen and Industrialists indictment drafted by the Istanbul Republic Chief Prosecution Terrorism and Organised Crime Investigation Office has been accepted. In the indictment, in which FETO ringleader Fetullah Gülen is named as the number one suspect, three aggravated life sentences each and custodial sentences of from 16 years to 25 and a half years each are sought for Gülen, Turkish Confederation of Businessmen and Industrialists Chair Rızanur Meral and Turkish Confederation of Businessmen and Industrialists General Secretary Mustafa Muhammet Günay on the counts of ‘breach of the constitution’, ‘attempting to overthrow parliament’, ‘attempting to overthrow the Republic of Turkey’ ‘Establishing or directing an armed terrorist organisation’ and ‘forging private documents.’
In the indictment, custodial sentences of from seven and a half years to fifteen years each are sought on the count of ‘membership of an armed terrorist organisation’ against 83 businesspeople, including Kadir Topbaş’s son-in-law Ömer Faruk Kavurmacı together with Ahmet Tuzlu, Cahit Durmaz, Faruk Güllü, İsmail Hakkı Kısacık, Mehmet Fatih Baltacı, Murad Abdurrahman Baltacı, Murat Atakan Kayalar, Mustafa Şevki Kavurmacı, Rana Tezcan Açıkgöz, Harun Akca, Mehmet Zenginer, Salih Zeki Azak, Semih Sadır, Tolga Güven, Yüksel Nalbant and Süleyman Düzgün. Alongside the count of organisation membership, prison terms of from one to three years each are also sought on the count of ‘forging private documents’ for the suspects Ramazan Erdem, Serkan Ercan and Süleyman Tari.
Kavurmacı, who had been detained as part of the FETO investigation, was freed on 4 May with health problems cited as grounds, and this decision courted much controversy. The sickness of epilepsy was cited as grounds for Kavurmacı’s release on 4 May.
