Academic takes own life following non-renewal of his contract
DISMISSED FROM HIS POST
Mehmet Fatih Traş, one of the signatories of the ‘We will not be a party to this crime’ declaration by the Academics for Peace, has taken his own life following his dismissal from his post after having completed his doctorate while employed as a research worker at Çukurova University Faculty of Political and Administrative Sciences between the years of 2010-2016. Traş’s funeral was held yesterday, attended by his family, close friends and colleagues.
DOORS SHUT IN HIS FACE
The Eğitim Sen educational trade union, noting that Traş’s appointment was not renewed because he signed the declaration, commented, ‘Those responsible for his departure from our midst are those who at every opportunity react with the rhetoric of hostility and hatred towards the signatories of the peace declaration.’ Traş’s teacher Associate Professor Dr Kenan Lopcu said, ‘First, positive replies came from places he applied to. Then the doors were shut in his face. I am heavy hearted. It should not have come to this.’
