‘WE ARE RETURNING IT TO LIFE’!

Bayrampaşa Municipality is promoting a housing project planned for the site of a prison with an announcement that courts controversy. The municipality’s promotional material, making reference to the ‘Return to Life’ massacre that claimed the lives of twelve people on 19 December 2000, includes the statement, ‘Bayrampaşa Prison, which acquired fame in the Return to Life operation, will this time indeed be the address of a “return to life”.’
JUDICIARY: CONTRARY TO TOWN PLANNING PRINCIPLES

A stay order has been issued for the fourth time by the judiciary over the development plan that is part of the urban generation project promoted by the municipality. Istanbul Administrative Court No 13 said, ‘There is no public benefit.’ The Istanbul branches of the Chamber of Mechanical Engineers said that, in view of the expected large earthquake, the plot should remain ‘uncovered’.

THEY SPOKE OF A RETURN TO LIFE

Bayrampaşa Prison, whose former name was Sağmalcılar, was opened in 1968. During the ‘Return to Life’ operation that was conducted simultaneously throughout Turkey in 2000, twelve women were burnt to death. The trial into the women’s deaths is still in progress before Bakırköy Serious Crime Court No 13.
