Robust opposition decision from the CHP
The CHP’s parliamentary group convened under the chairship of General Chair Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu to assess the referendum results. The meeting, held closed to the press at party headquarters, lasted around six and a half hours. The CHP, arguing that the legitimacy of the poll was debatable with unstamped votes having been deemed valid, decided to engage in robust opposition rather than abandon parli
According to a report by Başak Kaya of Sözcü, 45 MPs addressed the meeting and views were expressed about the course of the referendum and the party’s stance. MPs apparently voiced criticism over the impression given that the party was divided with Selin Sayek Böke’s announcement as party spokesperson that appeared to countenance extra-parliamentary politics and Group Deputy Chair Levent Gök's subsequent comment that, ‘There is no such decision.’ However, Kılıçdaroğlu reportedly stated that all comments made following the referendum were passed with his knowledge and approval, and said, ‘There is no problem overall with the comment that Böke made. Her making such a comment in response to a question she fielded led to these interpretations. The pro-regime media took it out of context. As she was at a meeting, Gök made a comment about the matter at my behest.’
It was learnt that Kılıçdaroğlu, who made the assessment, ‘We kept the promise we made to the people and stood over the votes but the Supreme Election Council stole them. The deeming of unstamped votes to be valid and the ruling passed by members over our annulment application will remain as a black stain on our history,’ gave the instruction that they would not abandon parliament.
Kılıçdaroğlu is said to have instructed the three group deputy chairs and MPs to, ‘Engage in robust opposition without becoming impolite or being divisive and so as to champion all groups of voters,’ just as in discussions over the constitutional amendment. Kılıçdaroğlu reportedly instructed MPs to go to their regions within two months and make gratitude visits and explain the legitimacy problem to the people and stated that they would not abandon parliament. It has been learnt that Kılıçdaroğlu said, ‘We will champion those who voted “yes” and those who voted “no”,’ and, ‘We will wage a decisive fight in parliament. We will stage a robust opposition with language that is not harsh. We will exercise our right to speak until the end. We will pay no heed to obstacles. Your word, as speaker of parliament, will hold no sway and you will be unable to do your duty. You see if can interfere with the length of time that I speak. There will be no such thing as agreement or reconciliation.’
On the other hand, he reportedly stated that there may be ‘Democracy and justice rallies’ in the near future, and stressed that they, as the CHP, were not summoning anybody onto the street. However, if the base went onto the street, a decision had been taken to stand up for those people. Kılıçdaroğlu is said to have stated, ‘We are candidates to govern the country and have no business on the streets. We will exercise all our legal and democratic rights.’
