ATTACK ON FOUNDING VALUES
The chairs of 18 bar associations, coming together at the Expanded Aegean and Marmara Region Bar Association Chair Meeting, announced that they would not remain silent in the face of the constitutional amendment that will bring the country under a single-man regime. It was stressed in the joint text that was issued that the constitutional amendment constitutes an attack on the Republic’s founding values.
THE CONSTITUTION CANNOT BE AMENDED UNDER A STATE OF EMERGENCY
With it stated in the announcement that legitimate debate over the constitution was impossible under state of emergency conditions, it was also stressed that the proposed constitutional amendment did not come about as a demand from the people. It was said in the announcement, ‘Parliamentary democracy is eliminated under the union of powers system envisaged by the constitutional amendment.’
THIS IS A CHANGE OF REGIME
The warning was made in the bar association chairs’ announcement, ‘What is mooted is a change of regime rather than constitutional amendment. It is the endeavour to surrender the country and people’s rights and freedoms to one person. Even were that person the most democratic person in the world, they would plainly still be transformed into a dictator with so much power and lack of accountability.’
