Cumhuriyet.com.tr’s Editor-in-Chief Oğuz Güven’s 59th birthday was celebrated by his family and friends.
Güven’s relatives and friends congregated in Kadıköy’s Yoğurtçu Park to celebrate his birthday and conveyed their wishes for his freedom to Güven as he embarks on a fresh year. Alongside Oğuz Güven’s fellow press workers, the event was attended by his daughter Demet Güven Akyıldız, son-in-law Yavuz Akyıldız and two-and-a-half-year-old grandson Aren Akyıldız. Güven’s friends, who took a photograph and sent a birthday message through the press as there is a visitation ban at the prison, called for the immediate release of Oğuz Güven and the other detained journalists. Güven was detained on ‘organisational propaganda’ charges due to the Tweet ‘A lorry mowed down Chief Prosecutor Mustafa Alper, who drafted the first Fethullah Gülen Terrorism Organisation (FETO) indictment’ that was soon deleted after Chief Prosecutor Mustafa Alper lost his life in a traffic accident on 10 May. Güven has been in Silivri Prison since 15 May.
