GOOD LUCK
Citizens who poured into the street where Mumcu was assassinated on the anniversary of his death shouted the slogans, ‘We will hold the murderers to account,’ ‘Turkey is secular and will remain secular,’ ‘The murderers will stand to account before the people’ and ‘Those who lay down their lives for the revolution are immortal.’ Citizens, having left carnations and lit candles at the memorial at the place the bomb went off, sang the folk song ‘Good Luck’, which includes Uğur’s name in its title, in unison.

ENIGMA REMAINS OVER THE MURDERERS
CHP Leader Kılıçdaroğlu, who attended the ceremony, said, ‘Uğur Mumcu was a National Independence Army revolutionary without a fur cap; a journalist who stood by democracy. We insistently and decisively await the apprehension of his murderers.’ Ceremonies in commemoration of Mumcu were held at his graveside, Ankara University Faculty of Law, where he studied, and at various venues in the country.

DEEP ‘HOPELESSNESS

  • Those in high office said with reference to the Mumcu assassination, ‘This is our debt of honour.’ Certain henchmen were apprehended years later. But full payment of the ‘debt of honour’ remains elusive.
  •  In the article he sent to Cumhuriyet for the Yunus Nadi Article Contest, he said, ‘We will and must embark on everything with Atatürk’s strength and the hope of the tenth anniversary year.’
  • How did he beat Toktamış Ateş in the debate over the Five Year Development Plan?
  • When he was put on trial following 12 March, he stood accused of being a communist for switching over the words in a folk song to say, ‘The flag will wave from left to right.’
