Baby Deran, separated from her mother, constantly crying

Teacher Ayşe Çelik has been incarcerated for fourteen days in Diyarbakır E Type prison for having phoned into the Beyaz Show and said, “Let children not die.” Ayşe teacher, who is housed in the same wing as more than thirty people where two or three people sleep in the same bunk bed, has had to place her six-month baby, who has numerous food allergies, in the care of her mother so as not to be affected by prison conditions. Deran baby is being looked after by her fifty-one-year-old grandmother, who has high blood pressure and diabetes. Granny said, “Deran is six months but recognises her mother. She feels the absence of her mother. She gets bad tempered about this. She’s been crying all the time for several days.”

 “She’s not used to the bottle.”

 Granny, noting that Deran baby sees her mother every day, commented, “I take Deran to the prison and hand her over to the warders. And the warder takes her to Ayşe. They part after a short while.” Granny, indicating that all her clothes are boil washed after her granddaughter is brought home from jail, remarked, “Deran is a baby with weak immunity. I boil wash all her clothes on returning from prison so that she does not catch germs. But, she has been pretty unwell for the past one or two days. She can’t eat everything, actually. She’s not used to the bottle.” Granny, describing how Ayşe teacher’s eyes filled with tears on first contact with her daughter in jail, said, “I told my Ayşe, ‘I promised you I wouldn’t cry. Don’t you cry, either.’”
