The list of parliamentary candidates for the 24 June elections was made known at the meeting held by the Republican People’s Party’s (CHP) Party Assembly on Sunday chaired by General Chair Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu.

A noticeable feature of the CHP’s list that has leaked to the press is the small number of women candidates and the exclusion from the list of certain active women MPs.

According to the first information to leak out, certain women MPs whose names have frequently come to public attention of late are not included on the CHP’s list of candidates.

Most prominent among these is doctor of medicine and Manisa MP Tur Yıldız Biçer. With Biçer actively engaged in parliamentary work particularly in the health area for all the time she has been an MP, she became the topic of conversation for sending a Turkish dictionary to Justice and Development Party Istanbul MP Burhan Kuzu following a dialogue she once took part in on Twitter.

From what has been learnt, jurist and Ankara MP Şenal Sarıhan has not been resubmitted as a candidate, either.

Sarıhan, known for her work in the field of human rights, acted as an intervening party in trials such as those into the assassinations of Bahriye Üçok, Muammer Aksoy, Uğur Mumcu and Ahmet Taner Kışlalı in the 1990’s, and served as a lawyer for relatives of those who lost their lives in the Sivas massacre.

Izmir MP Zeynep Altıok Akatlı is also absent from the list. Zeynep Altıok Akatlı, daughter of poet Metin Altıok who lost his life in the Sivas massacre in 1993, was a member of the Parliamentary Human Rights Commission until her resignation in February.

With Altıok putting her name to numerous initiatives in the areas of women’s rights and human rights, last week saw her launching a report titled “Human Rights under AKP Rule” and she most recently accompanied Ayşe Çelik, known as "Ayşe Teacher,” who was sentenced to imprisonment for her comments on a programme she phoned into in January 2016, on her way into prison.
